The Paintings of George Caleb Bingham : A Catalogue Raisonné

This updated and revised catalogue raisonn;e of the paintings of this important 19th-century American artist is meant to supercede the preliminary catalog that accompanied the author's George Caleb Bingham: The Evolution of an Artist (CH, Jun '68). Concentrating here on the paintings, this well-constructed volume presents adequate reproductions of almost 350 works, providing information for these as well as for more than 200 additional works. Entries for each painting are modeled after the 1967 edition and include size, media, provenance, exhibitions, bibliographic references, and comments by the author (which, in the case of portraits, includes a brief biographical description of the subject). For this edition Bloch has written an informed 28-page essay: a series of vignettes focusing on events and individuals significant to Bingham's artistic development. Not included is the lengthy monographic treatment of the artist and the analyses of his major works found in the 1967 title; thus, scholars and students must still rely on the earlier work. Concludes with a detailed chronology, selected bibliography, and well-functioning index to the paintings. Highly recommended for libraries concerned with either art history or, because of the content of Bingham's work, the history of Missouri.-J.H. Carmin, University of Oregon

The premier scholar of the great painter of nineteenth-century Missouri river and town life updates the catalogue raisonn in his George Caleb Bingham: The Evolution of an Artist (Univ. of California, 1967), adding some 100 paintings that have come to light in the interim. In toto, 449 definitely assigned Binghams are as exhaustively described as possible, which is often scantily since many are lost or destroyed. Twenty-three of Bingham's most famous paintings appear in color, another 325 in black and white. The printing on flat-finish eggshell stock loses some of the pictures' dark-hued details because of the small size of reproduction rather than any fuzziness in the imaging. Since he discussed Bingham's art in his earlier book, Bloch devotes the generous introduction here to the artist's personality as disclosed in his own and contemporaries' writings. A fine work of American art scholarship that thoroughgoing art collections will welcome. Chronology, bibliography, and index. RO. 759.13 Bingham, George Caleb Catalogues raisonnes [CIP] 85-29013
